She can sew… The Ugly

(This post will have no photos. It is too embarrassing!)
My parents came to visit me this weekend. It was lovely to have a good visit with them. Since moving to our small island we do not see each other as much as we used to.
With her, my mom brought her sewing machine. Yes, I was utterly inspired by a blog I’ve been reading lately called Soule Mama. Thank you Andrea for your linky love. I’ve been attempting knitting, this hasn’t gone too bad, (but thank you Warren for your suggestion at loom knitting. I’ll have to look into that.) Right now I’m doing the good ol’ two needles and the wool. Success has been moderate as I haven’t tried anything really difficult yet.
Anyway, back to sewing. I got some frabric at the Nu-To-U, which is our on-island Thrift store. $4 for quite a bit of fabric. I took a pattern my mom brought for a nightie. I thought, that looks simple. How can it go too far wrong?
Little did I know.
I will not post photos of the results. My mother is a very patient coach.
And I will not give up.
But I have never
ever
seen a more ugly nightie
in all
my
life!

Keep at it! : ) Your first project should be something you save as an example of where you started from!
I haven’t done much sewing either, and left my $20 thrift store Singer in Victoria. But I’ll return to it this winter and have some simple projects in mind. Start with the basics, dearie! Easy reusable bags, storage pouches, etc, and work up to the complicated patters.
And find some lovely older ladies who can give you lessons. You can hear their stories and learn to sew at the same time!

P.S. Don’t be too proud to post a photo! We all have beginner disasters that provide a good laugh ; )

Thank you for the encouragement. Today I sewed on a zipper on a crochet pouch I made. (We won’t mention that the zipper is backwards…) And some buttons.
bags sound managable:)

Yay you! Bag’s are easy. The bag I made you was really easy and fun to make too. Try making place mats. They are very simple and decorate any table. you can practice quilting on them too when perfects the ability with a sewing machine. I can’t wait to see the Ugly nightie! Will you show me?

Manda,
Too cute! I can feel your pain. The extent of my sewing skills include baby blankets and curtains. All of which take really no common sewing sense. Although I do plan on taking up quilting when I’m old and gray. Will you join my old lady quilt club?
And yes, you must post your nightie. Perhaps even a fashion show is in order…

Thank you y’all for your encouragement. Um yeah, there really will be no fashion show.
I’ve been more successful in my knitting and have a good start on a toque. Anyone have a good (easy) sock pattern for knitting?
And really, I’ve found that being really good at baking cookies gets me far in life. I can be awful at sewing if immediately after I sew a disaster, I pull out the most delicious batch of cookies.:) There are compromises to homesteading, I believe…. At least that makes me feel better!
